The best beaches in Algarve

With Raquel & Miguel

During summer Algarve is definitely Portugal’s most popular destination. Sometimes it’s annoying how crowded it gets, but it’s impossible to resist the dramatic landscapes with rock formations, breathtaking cliffs and beautiful golden beaches.

We put together a list of our favorite beaches in Algarve coast. Beware there are hundreds of beaches in this region, this is just a small sample of what Algarve has to offer you.

We will write all the names in Portuguese so it’s easier for you to insert the location on Google Maps.

Praia do Carvoeiro

This beach is quite small, but its location near the fishing village of Carvoeiro gives it a charming view to the white houses on the top of the cliffs.

Carvoeiro beach is also convenient if you enjoy the comfort of being close to restaurants, bars or shops.

Praia de Benagil

Benagil beach itself is nothing special… BUT if you head less than 200m to the east side, you will find one of the most beautiful sea caves you have ever witnessed!!

You can reach this grotto by joining a boat trip, renting a kayak/paddle board or swimming.

The first option is the most comfortable one, but you are not allowed to get out of the boat. This means you don’t have the opportunity to spend time inside the cave. You only have a glance of it and they give you time to take some pictures.

The second option allows you to have a kayak or paddle board during 45 minutes and this will cost you around 30€. You will be able to get in this natural wonder, although you have limited time to spend inside.

The last option is definitely the most budget-friendly way to get to know this place, however it’s also the most physically demanding. Saying this, unless you are an experienced swimmer we wouldn’t advise you to try it. Algarve may have Mediterranean vibes but you will still be swimming in Atlantic ocean. The currents are quite strong and sometimes it can be tricky if you are not use to them. The best way it’s to check the weather conditions and go there during the period the tide is low. You can also take with you a float, we found it quite helpful, specially if you have intentions to go with your photography gear.

Praia do Carvalho

This beach is located next to praia de Benagil and it’s famous for having a cliff jumping spot. If you like a little bit of adrenaline this is the spot for you!

Praia da Marinha

This beach is often ranked among the best beaches in Europe and we’re pretty sure you won’t be disappointed! Even if you’re not such a big fan of going to the beach we still recommend that you take the walking path on the top of the cliffs. The view is mesmerizing! If you are looking to impress your girl, prepare a picnic and you will be rewarded with one of the best sunsets of your life!

This beach is well known for the variety of emblematic rock formations. Probably you already saw some of them on post cards advertising this region. This is also a great spot to snorkel, cause the water is really clear.

Praia do Camilo

Praia do Camilo is quite small, which means unfortunately it’s always packed during the summer season. To access the beach you have to go down a long staircase (the worst part is definitely going up!), but the views are worth it! When you get down if you turn left you will see there is actually another beach if you go through a short tunnel carved inside the rock.

Praia do Ancão

If you are not such a fan of cliffs and big rock formations, Ancão beach is the right one for you. We really like to go to this beach cause it’s never as crowded as Vilamoura Beaches or Quarteira beaches. Besides, you will have a privilege view to the sunset. You can also rent lounge chairs if you’re looking to relax a bit!

Praia dos três irmãos

As many of you know, we’re always looking for the perfect spots to shoot. Praia dos Três Irmãos is definitely THE beach! We were amazed with all the little caves, arches, grottos, rock formations and cliffs with breathtaking views. Besides, this beach is huge, which gives you plenty of space. In Algarve is almost a privilege not having to share your towel with unknown neighbors.

Praia da Albandeira

This beach is quite small and the access is only available during low tide. You will notice how the cliffs surrounding the beach have been eroded by the action of the sea beating against the rock, forming caves at the base of the cliffs. If you forget to check the weather cast you can always enjoy the crystal clear blue water from the top!

Praia dos estudantes

This beach reminds us a lot of Fiordo di Furore (a piece of paradise on the Amalfi Coast). Maybe because of that we like to visit this place so often. Do you know that kind of déjà vu feeling? It’s exactly what we feel when we are here and we like the sensation of revisiting it over and over again.

Note: Given the risk of landslides and loose stones falling on to the beaches, you are advised to keep a safe distance from the cliffs.
